Firm quote before any work

Drop off in Manayunk or mail in

If a drive has failed, stop using it now. Every restart, every "repair" utility and every re-format makes recovery harder. Bring it to MackTechs at 4329 Main Street in Manayunk, or mail it in from anywhere in the US. We handle intake, packaging and insured shipping to our partnered recovery facility, where a $100 lab diagnostic pinpoints the failure within 48 to 72 hours of arrival. You get a firm quote before any work starts, the $100 is credited toward the recovery, and if your data can't be recovered you pay nothing more.

Start here: what to do right now

  • Power it down. A clicking, grinding or repeatedly spinning-up drive is damaging itself every second it runs.
  • Don't run recovery software on the failed drive. Writing anything to it can overwrite the files you want back.
  • Don't open the drive. Platters are ruined by a single fingerprint or dust particle.
  • Bring the whole device if the drive is inside a laptop, desktop or external enclosure. We'll remove it safely.

Hard drive data recovery — from $499

This is what we do most: internal and external hard drives from desktops, laptops and enclosures (Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, LaCie, G-Drive and others). Deleted files, accidental formats, corrupted partitions, drives that show up but won't open, drives that aren't detected, and drives that click or won't spin. See the full hard drive recovery page →

Logical, firmware or electrical

$499–$1,500

Drive spins normally or has a board/firmware fault; data is inaccessible. Most common.

Crashed heads

$1,299–$2,500

Clicking, beeping, not reading. Cleanroom head swap.

Platters or helium drives

$1,899–$3,149+ / $2,500–$4,399+

Severe damage or sealed helium drives. Quoted after diagnostic.

SSD and flash recovery

SSDs fail without warning: no noise, then nothing. Logical SSD recovery runs $399–$1,000, firmware and controller faults $999–$1,899, and chip-off NAND extraction $1,249–$3,149. Flash drives and SD cards run $199–$2,199 depending on damage. Hardware-encrypted drives are evaluated case by case and we'll tell you honestly when the odds are poor before you spend anything.

Mac and MacBook data recovery

Older MacBooks with a removable drive are a straightforward hard drive job. Newer Macs with storage soldered to the logic board need the board to power on to reach the data, which is board-level work first and recovery second ($1,249–$2,500+). Liquid-damaged and no-power Macs are the usual case. Mac liquid damage repair →

iPhone data recovery

Phone storage is encrypted and tied to the logic board, so recovery means getting the phone to boot long enough to back it up. Water damage, no-power and boot-loop iPhones are what we see most; full lab recovery is $1,899 flat. How iPhone data recovery works →

RAID and business drives

Two-drive arrays run $1,299–$2,500, RAID 5/6 and NAS units $1,899–$4,399, enterprise arrays are quoted after diagnostic. If you're a Philadelphia business without a working backup, the recovery you're paying for today is the backup you didn't have. Managed IT plans →

How it works

  1. Drop off or mail in. We log the drive, note the files you need most, and pack it in anti-static material.
  2. Insured shipping to our partnered facility. The $100 lab diagnostic starts within 48 to 72 hours of arrival.
  3. Firm quote. You approve the exact price before any recovery work begins. The $100 is credited toward it.
  4. Recovery and delivery. Your data comes back on a new external drive (bought from us or supplied by you), and we verify your key folders with you at pickup. Recovered data is purged from the lab after delivery.

Standard turnaround is about 7 to 10 business days door to door. Need it faster? Priority (+$250), Urgent (+$500) and Emergency same-day (+$1,000) move the diagnostic to the front of the queue.
