About our batteries: All MacBook battery replacements use high-quality aftermarket cells. Each battery is tested before installation for proper charge capacity and cycle count. Battery replacements carry a 90-day manufacturer warranty (separate from our 1-year repair warranty on other services). If your battery is swollen, bring it in as soon as possible - a swollen battery can damage your trackpad and logic board.

Why Choose MackTechs for MacBook Battery Replacement

We have replaced hundreds of MacBook batteries out of our Philadelphia shop since 2014, across every era from the classic unibody A1278 through current M3 Airs. We see every common failure mode: the Service Recommended warning in macOS, dead cells that will not hold a charge past 20 percent, sudden shutdowns at 40 percent, won-t-charge-past-80-percent issues, and the scariest one, visibly swollen cells that push up on the trackpad or bulge the bottom case.

Modern MacBook batteries are not a snap-in part. The entire 2015 and later Retina lineup has the battery glued to the top case with strong adhesive strips, and on Touch Bar models (A1706, A1708, A1989, A1990) the only safe access is from the top case out. We use a heated-pad process to soften the adhesive without damaging the trackpad, logic board, or the cells themselves. Every replacement is calibrated through a full discharge-and-recharge cycle before pickup so macOS reports the correct design capacity.

We back every MacBook battery replacement with a 90-day limited warranty on the battery cells. That is shorter than our normal 1-year shop warranty because lithium batteries are consumable parts that wear with normal use no matter who installs them. The 90 days covers any cell defect, early capacity loss, or workmanship issue. Real Philadelphia storefront, free diagnosis, fixed quote before any work starts, and safe disposal of your old cells through certified channels.

Battery Issues We Fix

Any of these symptoms usually means the battery has reached the end of its usable life. Some are safety issues (swelling) and some are just inconvenience (short runtime). All of them are fixable with a replacement cell and a calibration.

Service Recommended Warning

macOS detects high cycle count or capacity loss and flags the battery in System Settings. The Mac will still run on AC power.

Swollen Battery

Trackpad pushed up, bottom case bulging, MacBook wobbling on a flat table. STOP using the laptop and bring it in today. See safety notes below.

Sudden Shutdowns

MacBook drops dead at 30 to 50 percent with no warning. Usually indicates a worn cell that cannot sustain current draw under load.

Will Not Hold a Charge

Runtime drops from hours to minutes. Battery charges to 100 percent but discharges almost immediately.

Stuck at Not Charging

Charger is plugged in but macOS refuses to charge the battery. Sometimes a battery issue, sometimes a charging circuit fault, which we also repair.

High Cycle Count

After 4 to 6 years of daily use most MacBook batteries reach Apple end-of-life thresholds and start flagging in macOS.

Our Battery Replacement Process

Every battery job follows the same careful workflow to protect the logic board, trackpad, and new cell pack. Most replacements are completed within 2 to 3 business days after diagnosis, and same-day turnaround is sometimes possible when the correct battery is in stock for your model.

  • Diagnose battery health. We read cycle count, condition, and capacity directly from the battery management chip, and check for any visible swelling or corrosion.
  • Disconnect power safely. AC is unplugged and the battery connector is isolated before any disassembly begins. This is especially critical on swollen units.
  • Heat-release the adhesive. On glued-in Retina models we use a controlled-heat pad to soften the strips without damaging the trackpad ribbon or the logic board above it.
  • Install fresh cells. New adhesive strips, correct connector orientation, cables routed without twists or pinches.
  • Calibrate and test. Full discharge followed by a full recharge cycle, then we confirm the system reports the new battery design capacity before pickup.

MacBook Models We Replace Batteries For

We replace batteries in every MacBook Pro and MacBook Air from 2009 through the current M3 generation. Older unibody models are the easiest jobs because the battery is not glued in. Retina, Touch Bar, and Apple Silicon models require the glue-release workflow described above.

Swollen battery warning. If the trackpad is lifted off the surface, the bottom case is bulging, or the laptop wobbles when set down flat, do not charge or use it. Disconnect from power, put it on a non-flammable surface, and bring it in as soon as possible. Lithium battery fires are real and we would rather diagnose it for free today than have you wait another week. We dispose of damaged cells safely through certified recycling.

MacBook Battery Replacement FAQ

How much does it cost to replace a MacBook battery?
Cost depends on the specific model. Older unibody MacBook Pros are the cheapest because the battery is not glued in. Retina, Touch Bar, and Apple Silicon models cost more because the battery is bonded to the top case and requires safe-removal procedures. We diagnose every battery for free and give you a fixed quote within 24 hours before any work begins. Every battery replacement includes our 90-day limited warranty on the cells. Get a free quote or call (215) 914-5775.
My MacBook says Service Recommended - does that mean I need a new battery?
Usually yes. macOS shows Service Recommended or Service Battery when the battery has crossed Apple cycle-count thresholds, can no longer hold its rated capacity, or has an internal fault the battery management chip detects. The Mac will still run fine on AC power, but you should plan to replace the battery within the next few months before the runtime drops to nothing. We can confirm the diagnosis for free and give you a fixed quote plus our 90-day battery warranty.
Is a swollen MacBook battery dangerous?
Yes. A swollen lithium battery can rupture, leak, or in rare cases catch fire if punctured or stressed. If you see your trackpad rising up off the surface, the bottom of the case bulging, or the MacBook wobbling on a flat table, stop using it, unplug the charger, and bring it in today. We replace swollen batteries safely on the bench and dispose of the old cells through certified recycling channels. Do not try to pry a swollen battery out yourself. Request a free diagnosis and we will handle it safely.
How long does a MacBook battery replacement take?
Most battery replacements are completed within 2 to 3 business days after diagnosis. Same-day or next-day turnaround is sometimes possible when the correct battery is in stock for your specific model. Drop off at 4329 Main Street in Manayunk or mail it in from anywhere in the country. Mail-in end-to-end time is usually 5 to 10 business days including round-trip shipping, and every job includes the 90-day battery warranty.
What warranty do you offer on MacBook battery replacement?
We back every MacBook battery replacement with a 90-day limited warranty on the cells. This is shorter than the 1-year warranty we put on every other repair at MackTechs because lithium-ion batteries are consumable components that wear out with normal use no matter who installs them. The 90 days covers any manufacturing defect, early capacity loss, or workmanship issue. After the 90-day window, normal battery wear is on you, but we are always happy to take a look if something seems off.
