The iMac is the most under-served Apple product in independent repair. Most shops will not touch them because the screen is glued to the chassis and the logic board is buried behind layers of shielding. We do iMac work every week at our Mac repair shop in Philadelphia. We have the suction cups, panel-removal wheels, and replacement adhesive strips needed to safely open the 21.5-inch and 27-inch Retina displays without cracking the glass, and we have done the same on the new 24-inch M-series machines.
Inside the iMac, the failures fall into a few predictable buckets: dying spinning hard drives on Intel models, especially the 2012 through 2019 21.5-inch, failed Fusion Drive splits, blown power supplies on the 27-inch, swollen capacitors on the LCD driver board, and dead logic boards from age and heat. We do component-level board repair on every generation, swap and upgrade the internal storage to SSD on the Intel models, which can make a 2017 iMac feel like a new machine, and replace the power supply, fans, and panel where needed. We do not replace fused 21.5-inch Retina panels, those are landfill, but on every other configuration there is a path forward. For related laptop work, see our MacBook Pro repair page.
Every iMac repair starts with a free diagnosis. You will know the exact problem and the exact price within 24 hours. iMacs do not fit in a backpack, so you can drop yours at our Manayunk shop at 4329 Main Street, Philadelphia, or call us to coordinate a larger drop-off. All repairs are backed by our 1-year warranty, with 90-day coverage on batteries, which iMacs do not use. Mail-in is available for the 24-inch M-series in original Apple packaging. If you have a smaller desktop instead, visit our Mac mini repair page.

Common iMac Problems We Fix
The iMac is built like a desktop but feels like a sealed appliance. Most failures we see are not catastrophic, they are slow degradation: a hard drive that takes longer to boot every week, a power supply that hums and reboots randomly, a backlight that flickers when warm, or a fan that has been screaming for six months. The fixes are usually straightforward once the panel is safely off the chassis. We have repaired Intel 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs from every year between 2015 and 2020, plus the new 24-inch M1, M3, and M4 models. Free diagnosis tells you whether the repair is worth it.
- Slow or failing hard drive. Spinning HDDs and Fusion Drives are the number one iMac problem from 2012 through 2019. We replace with an SSD upgrade and migrate your data, which transforms the machine. Start at our Mac repair hub for general service info.
- Cracked or damaged LCD on 24-inch M-series. We can unbond and replace the LCD panel on the M1, M3, and M4 24-inch iMac without replacing the entire chassis.
- Power supply failure on 27-inch. The 27-inch iMac PSU is a known failure point - random reboots, fans at full speed, or simply no power. We swap the PSU and verify the rails.
- LCD driver or T-CON board failure. Lines on the screen, dim image, or random color shifts often trace back to the T-CON board or its capacitors, not the panel. We diagnose and replace at the component level.
- iMac will not turn on. We diagnose with a known-good cable first, then move to PSU, logic board, and SMC. We trace the failure rather than swap blind.
- Liquid damage. Less common on iMacs, but it happens (a spilled coffee through the back vents). Bring it in unpowered and we will clean and repair what we can.
- Fan noise and dust buildup. 2015 through 2019 iMacs collect a remarkable amount of dust through the bottom vent. A deep clean and a re-paste of the CPU and GPU often fixes random shutdowns and noise. See MacBook Air repair for a related line.
