Overheating Playstation 5 With No Video Repair

A PlayStation 5 came to us with no video and the description of overheating issues. The PS5 in question was overheating and then suffered a significant drop, resulting in a complete loss of video output.

Symptoms

The customer described the PS5 as getting excessively hot and shutting off frequently. After the fall, the device showed no video on HDMI, indicating potential internal damage.

Diagnosis

Upon inspecting the PS5, we discovered a damaged HDMI port, which was the obvious culprit for the lack of video output. More concerning, however, was the near absence of liquid metal on the APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), which is essential for cooling. This was likely the reason for the overheating issue.

We needed to address the damaged HDMI port so we could test the fix for the overheating problem, so we quoted a 24-hour turnaround for the repair and started work as soon as the repair was approved.

Parts and Process

The repair involved several steps and specific parts:

Disassembly: We carefully took apart the PS5.

HDMI Port Replacement: Using a hot air station, we removed the damaged HDMI port and replaced it with a new one.

Addressing the Overheating: We thoroughly cleaned the APU and heat sink. We then reapplied high-quality Thermal Grizzly Liquid Metal, ensuring optimal thermal conductivity.

Advice to PS5 Owners: An interesting note for PS5 users: Contrary to popular belief, keeping your PS5 upright may not be the best option. We advise laying the console flat to prevent oxidization of the APU, ensuring better cooling and a longer lifespan.
