Why Choose MackTechs for MacBook Trackpad Replacement

We have seen just about every MacBook trackpad failure mode: dead on arrival, ghost-clicking after a liquid spill, jumpy cursors, stuck click mechanisms, and the notorious 2015 13-inch MacBook Pro (A1502) unresponsive-trackpad issue. We replace trackpads on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models going back to 2013, and the trackpad is one of our most common repairs alongside batteries and screens.

Where most shops, and Apple itself, bundle a trackpad replacement with a full top case replacement (a $500 to $800 job that also swaps your keyboard, battery, and chassis along with the broken trackpad), we do component-level trackpad replacement wherever the model allows it. On Touch Bar MacBook Pros and post-2018 Airs that means unbolting the trackpad assembly from underneath without removing the battery or keyboard. The main limiting factor is part availability, which is why we recommend calling ahead so we can check stock or pre-order your specific trackpad.

We have been doing component-level repair since 2014 and keep common trackpads in stock for high-volume models (A1466 Air, A1502 Pro, A1989, A2338, A2681, A2941). Trackpads for less common models can usually be ordered in within a few days. Every trackpad replacement includes a free in-shop diagnosis, a fixed quote before any work starts, and our 1-year warranty on the completed repair. We will not talk you into a full top case swap unless the case itself is damaged.

MacBook Trackpad Issues We Fix

Trackpad problems range from obvious (completely dead) to subtle (one gesture dropping out). If your MacBook trackpad is doing any of the things below, bring it in for a free diagnosis.

Unresponsive Trackpad

No gestures, no clicks, no cursor movement. Very common on the 2015 A1502 13-inch Pro, and one of the most predictable failures on that model.

Ghost Trackpad

Cursor moving or clicking on its own with no touch input. Almost always liquid damage. We check the logic board trace at the same time.

Jumpy or Erratic Cursor

Cursor jumps across the screen with no pattern. Partial spill residue or a worn trackpad flex cable are the usual suspects.

Random Double Clicks

Single taps register as double clicks. Click mechanism wearing out or a macOS setting. We verify both before replacing parts.

Multi-Touch Gestures Broken

Pinch-to-zoom, two-finger scroll, or swipe gestures dropping out intermittently. Usually a worn trackpad cable inside the top case.

Physically Stuck Click

Click feels sticky, uneven, or locked. Usually liquid residue under the click mechanism, or a swollen battery pushing up from below.

Our MacBook Trackpad Replacement Process

Trackpad replacement sounds simple but the disassembly path varies a lot between generations. Here is how every repair runs through our bench.

  • Free diagnosis. Confirm the failure is the trackpad itself and not the flex cable, the logic board, or a macOS settings issue (tap-to-click, scroll direction, double-click speed). Liquid damage gets a separate inspection because spills often fry the cable and the logic board trace too.
  • Stock check and quote in 24 hours. Trackpads on some models need to be ordered in. We confirm part availability and quote the exact price before you ship or drop off the laptop.
  • Top case access. On newer Touch Bar and M1/M2/M3 models we open the bottom case, disconnect the battery, and unscrew the trackpad from inside. On older A1398 and A1502 Retina models, the logic board has to come out first to reach the trackpad screws, which is the main reason those models take longer.
  • Install the new trackpad. New trackpad, new screws, fresh cable seating. On Force Touch models we calibrate the click feel after install.
  • Test and reassemble. Verify cursor tracking, multi-touch gestures, force click, and haptic feedback before handover.

Most trackpad replacements are finished in 2 to 3 business days. Longer on A1398 and A1502 where full disassembly is required. All work is backed by our 1-year warranty.

Component-level trackpad replacement depends on part availability for your specific model. Please call or submit a quote request first so we can confirm stock before you bring the laptop in. Trackpad and keyboard share the same top-case assembly on most modern MacBooks, so if your keyboard is also acting up, see our MacBook keyboard replacement page. MacBook Trackpad Replacement FAQ

How much does a MacBook trackpad replacement cost?
Cost varies by model. Older MacBook Air and Pro trackpads are inexpensive; post-2016 Touch Bar and Apple Silicon trackpads cost more because of higher part cost and longer labor. We always diagnose for free and give you a fixed quote within 24 hours. Because we do component-level replacement instead of a full top case swap, our pricing is usually a fraction of what Apple would charge, and the work is backed by our 1-year warranty. Request a free quote.
Can you replace just the trackpad, or do I need a whole new top case?
On most models, yes, we replace just the trackpad. Apple standard fix is to swap the entire top case (trackpad, keyboard, battery, and chassis), which is why their quotes come back so high. On MacBook Airs and almost all Touch Bar MacBook Pros we can unbolt the trackpad assembly separately. The main limitation is part availability, so call ahead so we can confirm stock for your specific model.
My MacBook trackpad is clicking on its own, what is wrong?
That is almost always liquid damage. Even a small sugary spill (coffee, soda, juice) leaves residue between the click mechanism and the trackpad body that bridges contacts and generates phantom clicks. A new trackpad fixes the symptom, but if the spill also reached the logic board trace we will need to clean that at the same time. Bring it in for a free diagnosis so we can check both.
Is the 2015 MacBook Pro trackpad replaceable?
Yes. The 2015 13-inch A1502 and 15-inch A1398 are two of the most common trackpad replacements we see. The A1502 in particular has a well-known unresponsive-trackpad failure pattern. Both require full disassembly (logic board has to come out first), so turnaround is 2 to 3 business days and we recommend calling first to confirm we have the trackpad in stock.
How long does a MacBook trackpad replacement take?
Most trackpad replacements are finished within 2 to 3 business days of us receiving the laptop, including same-day diagnosis. Older 2013 to 2015 Retina models take the longer end of that range because of the disassembly required. Walk in to our Manayunk shop at 4329 Main Street or submit a mail-in request from anywhere in the US.
