Apple dropping hardware support for older Macs… What this means for you.

Apple announced they will be reclassifying some Macs from 2010-2013 as vintage as of December 30th, 2018. Effectively terminating support through out the US with the exception of California. This is not an uncommon practice but this raises some questions as how that will affect individuals who own and rely on these computers.

According to Apple: “Vintage products are those that have not been manufactured for more than 5 and less than 7 years ago. Apple has discontinued hardware service for vintage products”. Translation: Apple will not help you with anything regarding your Mac if it’s classified as Vintage. The list can be found here. Owners of any Mac classified as Vintage will need to seek out 3rd party repair shops for help with any hardware issues since Apple will not.

For those of you with Mac issues finding a reliable repair shop can be difficult. Macs are amazing computers and if cared for, can last for about 10 years if well maintained. So when you choose your repair shop you want to make sure they know exactly what they are doing. There is no guess work when it comes to Macs and an inexperienced freelancer could cost you big time. Good repair shops will stand by their work and have the ability to show you when a part is failing eg. (batteries, hard drives, keyboard, trackpad, SMC, display, I/O board, logic board, fan assembly, etc…). Always make sure to read reviews and ask for explanations for repairs or diagnostics.
